From the Style Collection. Ex Michel Prieur Collection.

Emesa was the ancestral homeland of the female side of the Severan dynasty, deriving from Julia Domna and her sister, Julia Maesa. Some consider Roman portraiture to have reached its peak in the Severan era, and numismatic portraits of Caracalla, in particular, possess a brutal realism that is still impressive today.
