KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28mm, 17.03 g, 11h). Perinthos mint. Struck circa 283-281 BC, or shortly thereafter. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; to inner left, joined foreparts of two horses above monogram; monogram in exergue. Thompson –; Müller 135; HGC 3, 1750q. Lightly toned. VF.

From the James Barry Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group 46 (24 June 1998), lot 236.

The reverse die used to strike the present coin was apparently used for a variety of issues at Perinthos--see Berk BBS 204, lot 68; CNG E-421, lot 31; Gorny & Mosch 134, lot 1206; Numismatick Naumann 81, lot 46; and Numismatick Naumann 63, lot 566 for examples of five separate issues with the same joined horse foreparts, but different monograms. As such, the joined horse foreparts symbol is certainly the mintmark, and only Perinthos is known to have employed it as such during this period.

Closing Date and Time: 23 September 2020 at 10:23:40 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
