SICILY, Syracuse. Hiketas II. 287-278 BC. Æ (22.5mm, 11.14 g, 10h). Laureate head of Zeus Hellanios left; thunderbolt to right / Eagle standing left on thunderbolt. CNS 157 Ds 59 Rs 14 R1 1 corr. (no control marks on rev.); BAR Issue 39; HGC 2, 1448. Green-brown surfaces. VF.

From the Grand Haven Collection, purchased from Classical Numismatic Group, 16 March 1996.

The entry in CNS for type 157 Ds 59 Rs 14 R1 1 has multiple errors. The description notes a star and letter A on the reverse, but this actually is a correction of type 157 Ds 59 Rs 14 R1 2, the sole example of which (Virzi 1752) clearly shows these controls. Unfortunately, the first example of CNS 157 Ds 59 Rs 14 R1 1 (McClean pl. 104, 2) is an erroneous entry that belongs under CNS 157 Ds 112 R1 4. The other two examples correctly show no control marks on their reverses.

Closing Date and Time: 7 October 2020 at 10:18:00 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
