FRANCE, Provincial. Provence (comté). temp. Bérenger V–Charles I d’Anjou. 1209-1266. AR Gros marseillais – 6 Coronats (20mm, 1.69 g, 4h). Marseilles mint. Struck after 1218. + COMЄS : PVINCIЄ, head left / + CIVITΛS MΛ(horizontal S)(horizontal S)IL, castle with crenelated turrets and gateway, and two towers and central cross on pelleted staff. Grierson, Coins of Medieval Europe 265; Rolland 17 and 24; Duplessey, Féodales 1614; Poey d’Avant 3955 (Charles I). Deeply toned. Good VF. An attractive Medieval portrait coin.
