NORMAN. Stephen. 1135-1154. AR Penny (18mm, 1.02 g). Voided Cross and Mullets type (BMC ii). Uncertain mint and moneyer. Struck circa 1145-1150. Crowned bust facing slightly left, holding to right / [...] Λm(?)[...], voided cross; mullets in quarters. EMC 2001.0582 (this coin); cf. Mack 53-66 (for type); North 878 var. (placement of scepter); SCBC 1280 var. (same). Some corrosion, mint and moneyer illegible. Good Fine. Rare.

Found Thetford, May 1990.

An interesting variety with the king holding the scepter to the right, rather than the left. The crude style suggests the possibility that this coin is a contemporary imitation, or else one of the many irregular issues of the Anarchy.
