NORMAN. Stephen. 1135-1154. AR Penny (18mm, 1.20 g, 7h). Profile/Cross and Piles type (BMC vi). Richmond Castle mint(?); [Rodbert?], moneyer. Struck circa 1150-1154. Crowned bust left, holding scepter / + [...]N : RIS, cross fleurée, with saltire cross at center and piles surmounted by trefoils in each quarter. Cf. Mack 81; North 879; SCBC 1281. Toned, test cut, broken and repaired. Near Fine.

This issue was previously thought to have been the product of the Castle Rising mint until a lead striking from Bertold’s dies was discovered on the river bank below Richmond Castle in 1987 (cf. M. Allen, “The mints and moneyers of England and Wales, 1066-1158” in BNJ 82 [2012], p. 114, n. 686).
