LOW COUNTRIES, Nederlandse Opstand (Dutch Revolt). Holland. 1566/8-1581. AR (42mm, 32.58 g). Coat-of-arms depicting lion rampant left within beaded border in an oval countermark on a 1561 Philipsdaalder of the Spanish Netherlands. For countermark: Van Gelder, “De Klop van 1573/4,” in De Geuzenpenning 3 (July 1954), H1; cf. P&W p. 22 (lion rampant); Azzopardi 665A (attributed to Malta). For host: Vanhoudt I 94. Host: Some areas of light corrosion. Near VF. Countermark: VF. Extremely rare.

From the El Medina Collection.

Further research indicates that both the countermark of the lion coat-of-arms and the lion rampant, attributed by Restelli & Sammut to Malta, are in fact issues of the 1573/4 Dutch Revolt.

Closing Date and Time: 21 October 2020 at 12:41:00 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
