Anonymous. 211-208 BC (or later). Æ Sextans (20.5mm, 7.42 g, 11h). Luceria series (Crawford struck bronze group 3). Mint in Luceria. Draped bust of Mercury right, wearing winged petasus; • • (mark of value) above / Prow of galley right; ROMA above; • • (mark of value) to either side of L. Crawford 97/14; Sydenham 128; RBW 409. Brown patina with touches of red, some minor porosity. Near VF. Rare.

From the Andrew McCabe Collection.

See Andrew McCabe, “The Roman Bronze Coinage struck in Apulia and South East Italy in the Second Punic War,” in Proceedings XV International Numismatic Congress Taormina 2015, where I explain that the L mintmarked coinage should be split based on style and fabric between Luceria and a camp mint near Herdonia, whereas P mintmarked coins should all be allocated to Canusium. This sextans was struck in the city of Luceria and is from the first (and only, contra RRC) weight reduction phase for struck bronzes from Luceria itself. [Andrew McCabe]

Closing Date and Time: 18 December 2019 at 11:30:40 ET.
