Tiberius Gemellus(?). Caesar, AD 35-37. Æ (17mm, 3.61 g, 3h). Philadelphia (as Neocaesarea) in Lydia mint. TIBEPION CEBACTON?, bare head right / NEOKECAPEIC, thunderbolt. LS 24 (under Tiberius Gemellus; same obv. die as illustration); RPC I 3017/1 (under Tiberius; same obv. die as illustration); Vagi 480 (under Tiberius Gemellus; same obv. die as illustration). Dark green patina, some red, minor smoothing. Good VF. Extremely rare.

From the Peter J. Merani Collection. Ex Nomos Obolos 5 (26 June 2016), lot 333.

For a discussion of this intriguing issue see RPC I p. 491-2. A major problem is due to the broken and recut obverse die, the only die known used for this type, that prohibits a clear reading even on an exceptional specimen like this one.

The final winners of all Triton XXIV lots will be determined during the live online sale that will be held on 19-20 January 2021. This lot is in Session One, which begins 19 January 2021 at 9 AM ET.
