MYSIA, Kyzikos. Circa 550-450 BC. EL Stater (19mm, 15.99 g). Head of young warrior left, wearing crested Attic helmet; to right, tunny diagonally upward right / Quadripartite incuse square. Von Fritze I 63; Greenwell 27; Boston MFA –; SNG BN –; BMC –; FSM 1432 = Hermitage Sale II 1147 Gulbenkian –; Jameson –. Toned, minor double strike. VF. Very rare, only four in CoinArchives.

From the Jonathan P. Rosen Collection.

The identification of the portrait on this issue is traditionally given to Athena (though Greenwell was hesitant), but S. Hurter’s analysis of the type concluded that it is more likely the depiction of a young warrior (see S. Hurter, “Eine Notiz zu Kyzikos: Krieger oder Athena?” in SM 227 [September 2007]).
