Von Fritze I 129; cf. Greenwell 75 (unlisted denomination); Boston MFA 1445 = Warren 1492; SNG BN –; BMC –; Gulbenkian –; Jameson 2191 = Weber 4972. Lightly toned, small deposit and light mark in field on obverse. Good VF. Rare.

From the Jonathan P. Rosen Collection.

This elegant style depicts the head of a gorgon, a common image in Greek art and mythology, that was thought to be a useful symbol for warding off bad luck. This seems to be extremely similar to the style of the silver issues of Apollonia Pontica, a nearby city on the Black Sea coast of Thrace with close economic ties to Kyzikos.
