Constantius I. As Caesar, AD 293-305. Æ Gilt Medallion (34mm, 24.41 g, 12h). CONSTANTI VS NOB CAES, laureate half-length “heroic bust” left, holding shield on left arm and spear pointing forward in right, seen from behind / MONETA AV GG, the three Monetae standing facing, heads left, each holding cornucopia in their left hand, scale in their right above a stack of coins at their feet. Unrecorded and apparently unique. VF. Gilding largely intact. Wonderful style.

From the Toliver Besson Collection. Ex Heritage 3056 (3 August 2017), lot 30122.

The fantastic heroic-style bust on this medallion harks back to the kings of the Hellenistic age and is a refreshing departure from the highly schematic portraits found on the contemporary coinage.

The reverse depicts the Tres Monetae, female personifications of the three metals of gold, silver, and bronze.
