Severina. Augusta, AD 270-275. Denarius (19.5mm, 2.88 g, 12h). Rome mint, 5th officina. 11th emission of Aurelian, January-September AD 275. Draped bust right, wearing stephane / Venus standing left, holding apple and scepter; Є. RIC V 6; RIC V online 1861; BN 285. Green patina, patch of roughness, traces of silvering. VF.

Part of Aurelian’s reform was the issue of a base silver coin about half the weight of the antoninianus, also containing about 5% silver. This was almost certainly designated a denarius, a successor to the venerable coin of the Roman Republic and early Roman Empire. A large number of these pieces were struck for his wife, Ulpia Severina, but the denomination was only sparingly struck by subsequent rulers up to the Tetrarchy.
