BOHEMIA. Bretislav I. 1037-1055. AR Denar (19mm, 1.03 g, 10h). Praha (Prague) mint. Struck 1037-1050. Bretislav standing left, holding standard / St. Wenceslaus seated facing, holding two cross-scepter; cross-scepter to right. Frynas B8.12; Cach 317; Smerda 150. Toned, areas of flat strke. Near EF.

Bretislav undertook a major monetary reform around 1050 in which he replaced the Carolingian Pound with the Prague Mark, from which 240 denaria were struck. While the size of the pre-reform denaria were comparable to the Carolingian deniers, the post-reform coins were much smaller, resembling Carolingian obols. Regardless, the high quality of the engraving was maintained, simply at a smaller scale.
