NORMAN. Stephen. 1135-1154. AR Penny (19.5mm, 0.93 g, 6h). Cross Moline ('Watford') type (BMC i). S– mint; Godefrei, moneyer. Struck circa 1136-1145. Crowned bust right, holding lis-tipped scepter / [+ GODFREI : O]N : S :, cross moline. Mack –; SCBI 12 (Ashmolean), 953 (same rev. die); North 873; SCBC 1278. Off center, small edge split, minor edge loss. Near Fine. Very rare.

From the Allan Williams Collection. Ex St James's 3 (3 October 2005), lot 131; Beauvais Hoard (Glendining, 4 November 1987), lot 131 (part of).

The reading of the reverse legend is verified by the die link to the Ashmolean coin, as well as a die duplicate in the Beauvais Hoard (the other coin in lot 131). Although Godefrei is known as the moneyer, he is otherwise unattested for this period, so the identification of the mint remains unknown. The cataloger of the Beauvais hoard noted that this issue is of the ‘highest rarity’, with only four others known.

Closing Date and Time: 16 December 2020 at 14:15:40 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
