CARTHAGE, First Punic War. Circa 264-241 BC. EL 1½ Shekels – Tridrachm (22mm, 11.01 g, 1h). Reduced standard. Carthage mint. Head of Tanit left, wearing wreath of grain ears, triple-pendant earring, and necklace with ten pendants / Horse standing right, head left; ouraios above. Jenkins & Lewis Group Xb, 448 var. (gold, not electrum; same dies); CNP 41; MAA 30. Lightly toned, trace deposits, numerous light cleaning scratches, die breaks on obverse. Good VF.

The dies for this piece were known to Jenkins & Lewis, but only for a unique coin that was struck in gold that was of the same types as their Group Xb. This coin, in electrum, suggests that the dies probably were made in due course for the standard electrum issues, but then used for some reason to strike an issue in gold. This event must have been in the midst of the issue, as the gold coin was struck at an earlier die state than the present electrum coin. The style of the engraving of Tanit on the obverse die used here is very similar to that of J&L 433, which they placed early in their Group Xb.
