Margarete Bieber. The History of Greek and Roman Theater. (Princeton University Press, 1961). Hardbound, 341 pages, 866 illustrations. This important volume was one of the first scholarly studies of the ancient theater when first published in 1939. The 1961 edition was expanded to include new research and is still a foundational reference work in the field. It discusses: satyr plays, tragedies, comedies, Aristophanes, the Dionysiac festivals, the development of theater building, scenery and mechanical devices, the evolution of acting; Menander; the Phlyakes; the Roman plays of the Republic; acting in Rome; Roman theatres; Seneca; the ancient theater's influence.
