CALABRIA, Tarentum. Circa 280 BC. AR Nomos (20.5mm, 7.25 g, 1h). Warrior, nude but for crested helmet, holding shield, dismounting from horse rearing left; YƎ to right / Phalanthos, nude, holding trident, riding dolphin right; below, hippocamp right. Vlasto 698 (this coin); cf. HN Italy 968. Deep old cabinet tone, some light scratches under tone, small edge cut. VF.

From the Matthew Curtis Collection. Ex Michel Pandely Vlasto Collection; Edward Herbert Bunbury Collection; Tobin Bush Collection.

This coin was likely sold in the first part of his collection offered by Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge on 15 June 1896, but his silver coins of Tarentum were mostly sold in large lots that were not illustrated. The identity of Mr. Tobin Bush is uncertain, but is recorded by Vlasto as having owned the coin at some time, likely before Bunbury.

Closing Date and Time: 29 January 2020 at 10:12:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
