ATTICA, Athens. Circa 165-42 BC. AR Tetradrachm (29.5mm, 16.54 g, 1h). New Style coinage. Timostratos, Poses, and Lach–, magistrates. Struck 102/1 BC. Head of Athena Parthenos right, wearing single-pendant earring and triple crested Attic helmet decorated with Pegasos and floral pattern / Owl standing right, head facing, on amphora; magistrates’ names across field; to right, Dionysos standing left, holding mask and scepter; E on amphora, ΠE(?) below; all within wreath. Thompson 824d corr. (this coin referenced, different letters in exergue); HGC 4, 1602. Old cabinet tone, minor die wear and a few scratches under tone in obverse field. Good VF.

Ex Berlin Museum Duplicates (L. Hamburger [90], 29 May 1929), lot 292.

The third magistrate’s name, the letter on the amphora, and the letters in the exergue are all engraved over a prior issue’s letters. Thompson records the exergue letters as ΣO, but on this specimen, in hand, this reading appears to be incorrect. What is visible appears to be more consistent with ΠE, which were the next letters used after ΣO in the issue.
