In 1738, having extinguished the last remnants of the Afghan Hotaki dynasty, Nadir Shah marched on the Mughal Empire. The Persians sacked Kabul and Jalalabad, Mughal-held cities in modern Afghanistan, as well as Peshawar and Lahore in Punjab. Persian style coins were struck at the occupied cities.
