Albert R. Frey was a founder and charter member of the New York Numismatic Club, serving as its first Vice-President from 1908 to 1918. He served as the sixth president of the American Numismatic Association from 1905 to 1907. Frey was famous as an unabashed elephant enthusiast. Illustrated at the end of Part XLVII of Frey’s series on “Tokens and Medals Relating to Numismatists and Coin Dealers,” The Numismatist, December 1905, p. 365. In its coverage of ANA participation in the Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, the publication told of Frey’s repeated visits to Carl Hagenbeck’s famed animal exhibition with pockets stuffed full of peanuts for the wildly approving baby elephants.
