KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (27mm, 17.09 g, 8h). Uncertain mint in Thrace. Struck circa 285-270/60 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, spear in background; to inner left, forepart of lion left above monogram; K in exergue. Thompson –; Müller –; cf. HGC 3, 1750. In NGC encapsulation 5770572-012, graded XF, Strike: 5/5, Surface: 2/5, scuffs. Very rare, unpublished with these control marks.

The style of the obverse portrait is remarkably similar to dies that were used in the coinage attributed to the Thracian dynast Skostokos, particularly those of Fischer-Bossert, Lysimacheier, Group C, as well as Fischer-Bossert’s obverse die V10 in the Skostokos-signed series. The composition of the flan on this piece is also consistent with that of the Skostokos series. However, the control marks are somewhat different from the Skostokos issues, so it is possible that this is a later issue struck from the same mint as his coins. At the same time, this may also be a late lifetime or early posthumous issue of Lysimachos from a mint in the Chersonese, as the general style is also similar to the later issues of both Lysimacheia and Sestos.
