IONIA, Smyrna. Circa 115-105 BC. Æ (20.5mm, 8.79 g, 12h). Pyrrhos, magistrate. Laureate head of Apollo right / Homer seated left, resting chin on hand and holding scepter; monogram and ΠYPPOΣ to left. Milne, Autonomous, Period XII, 241; SNG Copenhagen 1148. Green patina, minor roughness. VF.

This type is often referred to as a ‘Homereum,’ based on a passage in Strabo’s Geographica (xiv, i.37): “[T]he Smyrnaeans also lay especial claim to the poet [Homer] and indeed a bronze coin of theirs is called a Homereum.”
