Vespasian. AD 69-79. Æ Sestertius (32mm, 26.84 g, 6h). “Judaea Capta” commemorative. Rome mint. Struck AD 72-3. Laureate head right / VIC TORIA AVGVSTI, Victory standing right, foot on helmet, inscribing VIC AVG on shield set on palm tree. RIC II.1 390 (R2); Hendin 1521. Brown patina, a few small pits. Near VF. Rare.

From the Summer Haven Collection.

Although Judaea is not specifically mentioned on this rare sestertius type, struck in 72/3, the presence of the palm tree and the timing of the issue point to the Roman victory in the Jewish War being the victory being commemorated. In fact the war would drag on into 74 before the general L. Flavius Silva stormed the fortress of Masada and brought it to an end.
