Domitian. AD 81-96. Æ Sestertius (35mm, 27.05 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 95-96. Laureate head right / Domitian standing left, holding thunderbolt and spear, being crowned by Victory standing left, holding palm frond. RIC II.1 795 (R). Green patina, some weakness in obverse. VF. Exceptional reverse.

From the Summer Haven Collection.

Though not much of a soldier, Domitian led a number of campaigns against the Germans that pushed the frontiers forward. The Dacians proved far more troublesome, launching several raids across the Danube and destroying a Roman force sent to punish them. The Romans won an avenging victory over the Dacians in AD 88, but a revolt by the Roman general Saturninus in Germany in AD 89 prevented Domitian from following up on this success. The revolt was successfully crushed within a few weeks. Despite his uneven military record, the legionaries loved Domitian for raising their pay by nearly 50 percent.
