An elderly and well-connected senator, Marcus Cocceius Nerva was chosen emperor by the Senate immediately after Domitian's assassination. He had been something of a chameleon during his long career, loyally serving Nero and the Flavians with equal fervor. Once raised to the purple, he pledged to end Domitian's reign of terror and restore good government, which he did in fact accomplish, launching the era of the so-called “Five Good Emperors.”
