Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. Æ Sestertius (30mm, 19.53 g, 12h). Rome mint. Struck AD 145-147. Laureate bust right, slight drapery / COS IIII/ S C in two lines in exergue, Antoninus Pius driving slow quadriga left, extending hand and holding eagle-tipped scepter. RIC III 767a var. (bust type); Banti 120/A. Dark brown surfaces, a few pits on reverse. Good VF.

From the Summer Haven Collection.

Foss states that this quadriga type celebrates the fourth consulate of Antoninus Pius, which he assumed in AD 145. His argument is strengthened by the fact that Pius' principal heir, the Caesar Marcus Aurelius, who shared that consulship with him, is also shown in a slow quadriga on aurei and sestertii produced in his name.
