Volusian. AD 251-253. AR Antoninianus (22.5mm, 3.09 g, 6h). Rome mint. 1st emission(?), mid-late AD 251. Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / ROMAE AETERNAE, Roma seated left on shield, holding Victory and spear. RIC IV 196 (’Hybrid’); RSC 112. Toned, die break on obverse. VF. Rare.

The early issues of Trebonianus Gallus and Volusian include a number of reverse types seemingly not a part of the standard mint structure. Referred to in RIC as ‘hybrids,’ these may be a case of recycling of earlier dies from the reigns of Philip I or Gordian III.
