SICILY, Syracuse. Dionysios II. 367-357 BC. Æ Tetras(?) (22mm, 12h). Griffin springing left; clouds below / Horse prancing left, trailing rein, KAINON in exergue. Campana 1; CNS 1; HGC 2, 509 (all as Kainon). Black patina with light mineralized deposits. In NGC encapsulation 5872733-054, graded VF.

From the Robert W. Bartlett Bequest Sold for the Benefit of the American Numismatic Society. Ex Birkler & Waddell III (9 December 1981), lot 45.

Not identifiable with a known mint in Sicily, the bronze coins of this type inscribed KAINON have traditionally been attributed to Alaisa, or as independent issues by a band of Thracian mercenaries in Sicily. More recent scholarship has established that they were struck by Dionysios II in Syracuse.
