Antoninus Pius. AD 138-161. AR Denarius (17mm, 3.21 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck AD 138. Bare head right / Minerva standing left, holding Victory and shield set on ground; spear against left arm. RIC III 2; RSC 657a. Moderate iridescent cabinet tone. EF. With a exceptional portrait and a charming image of Minerva.

From the Style Collection. Ex Phil Peck Collection.

One of the first denarii struck after Antoninus officially assumed the title of Augustus in July of AD 138. The bareheaded portrait is a humble touch that Antoninus would return to in his coin portraits throughout the reign.
