Made during the Spanish Siege of 1574 from coinage dies on planchets that were stamped from pressed paper made from prayer books, this Gulden is the first true paper money ever issued in Europe. This specimen bears a 'klop' or countermark to distinguish it from the false examples that were also issued during the siege. After the siege ended, souvenirs were issued of a similar type. These common later issues lack the countermark and are usually encountered in a fresher state.
