CILICIA, Epiphanea. Severus Alexander. AD 222-235. Æ (34mm, 26.10 g, 7h). Dated CY 298 (AD 230/1). Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Athena standing left, holding spear and resting hand on shield. SNG BN –; RPC VI Online 7475 (this coin illustrated); SNG Levante –; SNG Copenhagen –; cf. BMC 3 (for rev. type on a coin of Julia Mamaea). Dark green patina. VF. Extremely rare, only three known to RPC including this coin.

To judge from the major collections, coins of Alexander from Epiphanea are extremely rare, while coins of the emperor’s mother, Julia Mamaea, appear to be much more common.
