EGYPT, Alexandria. Hadrian. AD 117-138. Æ Obol (20mm, 5.12 g, 12h). Dated RY 21 (AD 136/7). Laureate bust right, slight drapery on left shoulder / Kalathos between two torches; KA (date) across fields, LI(?) in exergue. Köln 1224-6 var. (date arrangement); Dattari (Savio) 1925 var. (same); K&G 32.762 var. (same); RPC III 6246 var. (bust type); Emmett 1166.21. Brown patina. VF. Extremely rare variety.

RPC 6246.4, in the Bibliothèque Nationale, has the same reverse date arrangement and has a note which reads “As D. Gerin has pointed out, the coin seems to have two dates, both across the field and also in the exergue. The kalathos also looks a bit different from the other coins of year 21. But the coin is in very poor condition, so it is diificult (sic) to be sure.” This coin is in a much better state of preservation and the details and date arrangement are clear. Of the 20 coins known to RPC, only this coin has this date arrangement.

Closing Date and Time: 5 January 2022 at 12:01:20 ET.

All winning bids are subject to an 18% buyer’s fee.
