Anonymous. 115-114 BC. AR Denarius (21mm, 3.85 g, 11h). Rome mint. Helmeted head of Roma right; X (mark of value) behind / Roma seated right on pile of shields, holding spear; birds in flight to upper left and right; to lower right, she-wolf standing right, head left, suckling the twins Romulus and Remus. Crawford 287/1; Sydenham 530; RSC 176; RBW 1117. Struck on a broad flan, small area of weak strike with some light marks. Good VF. This attractive reverse type featuring Romulus and Remus was faithfully revived under Titus, alongside a number of other early Republican and Augustan issues, for an aureus struck in AD 77-78. It was also used for a later restoration denarius of Trajan, circa AD 107. |
