SOUTHERN ASIA MINOR, Uncertain. 5th century BC. AR Stater (27x14mm, 10.71 g). Uncertain type / Head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet, within incuse square. Toned, green deposits, test cut, extensively hammered in antiquity. Near VF.

While the obverse has been obliterated by the hammering, the reverse type is reasonably clear. The type was used at disparate mints in southern Asia Minor, such as Side in Pamphylia and Soloi in Cilicia, as well as Lapethos on Cyprus. Coins were commonly hammered in antiquity, often in preparation for restriking, such as Athens did with their “pi-style” coinage in the 4th century.
