Caracalla. As Caesar, AD 196-198. AR Denarius (19mm, 3.35 g, 12h). Laodicea mint. Struck under Septimius Severus, AD 197-198. Bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right / Minerva standing left, holding spear set on ground to left and reversed spear. RIC IV 330; RSC 566. Attractive iridescent tone. Near EF. Charming portrait of the young Caesar.

From the Style Collection.

Many of Caracalla’s adolescent portraits, such as this denarius of him as Caesar, depict him as a fresh-faced, innocent lad with no hint of the scowling megalomaniac he would ultimately grow into.

”Simply put, this is a great coin ‘in hand.’” (From the consignor)
