DU KORN JUDE, Jewish merchant hanged from tree; city gate in background; in exergue, WOLFEILEZEIT/ 1695 / ◊ WER KORN INNHAELT DEM FLUCHEN DIE LEUTHE, grain sifter inscribed ABBE SEEGEN/ KOMMT UBER DEN/ DER ES VERKAVE/ SPRUCHE SALOMO/ XI 26. Friedenberg, Medals p. 5. Toned, edge marks. Fine. Rare.

From the Dr. Jay M. Galst Collection. Ex Downie-Lepczyk 75 (6 June 1987), lot 625.

In 1694, heavy rains and a swarm of locusts decimated crop yields in Germany, leading to widespread famine and spiking food prices. As rampant speculation exacerbated the food shortage, many people blamed Jewish merchants. A series of satirical medals were created to propagate this conspiracy. When famine returned in 1770-1772, a glut of new “Kornjude” medals were issued, again capitalizing on the supposed speculators.
