Nero. AD 54-68. Æ As (26mm, 12.32 g, 7h). Rome mint. Struck circa AD 65. Laureate head left / Temple of Janus with latticed window to left and closed doors to right. RIC I 306 or 307. VF, light brown patina, slight edge bend.

From the Ken Bressett Collection. Ex local coin show c. 1960 @ $13.50.

The temple doors were only closed when there was peace all over the Roman world: that did not happen very often. We know that they were closed twice during the reign of Augustus and, in 66 after Corbulo’s defeat of the Parthians; Nero was the only emperor to show the temple on his coins and it seems likely thatthe doors were mostly kept shut even in times of war

The final winners of all Keystone 6 lots will be determined at the online sale that will be held on 11 March 2022. Session Three, presenting part 1 of the Ken Bressett Collection, featuring Roman coinage, will be held Friday evening, 11 March 2022 beginning at 7:00 PM ET.
