KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AR Tetradrachm (28mm, 16.91 g, 12h). Lysimacheia mint(?). Struck 297/6-282/1 BC. Diademed head of the deified Alexander right, with horn of Ammon / Athena Nikephoros seated left, left arm resting on shield, transverse spear in background; monogram to inner left. Thompson –; Müller –; HGC 3, 1750a. Lightly toned, some marks and light scratches, tiny delamination on obverse. VF. Extremely rare.

This issue is unpublished in the standard references and the ANS photofile. The portrait model was used on dies at Lysimacheia, Lampsakos, and Alexandreia Troas, and a number of the dies used may be from the same hand, suggesting a centralized die engraving or a travelling celator who worked for each of these mints. However, the pattern of control marks on the latter two mints are quite elaborate and interconnected, whereas issues of Lysimacheia commonly bear only one or two control marks that do not repeat across issues. As such, Lysimacheia appears to be the most likely candidate for the mint of this issue.
