IONIA, Teos. Valerian II. Caesar, AD 256-258. Æ (20.5mm, 3.36 g, 6h). Bareheaded, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / The poet Anacreon seated right, playing lyre held on knee. SNG Copenhagen 1536; SNG Tire 304; BMC 87-9. Dark green patina. Good VF.

Anacreon was born in Teos about 582 BC and gained fame as a lyric poet. He left the city when it was threatened by the Persians circa 545 and subsequently helped to found Abdera in Thrace. He was later the court poet for the tyrant Polykrates of Samos. Upon his death, a statue was erected in the Acropolis in Athens.
