KINGS of THRACE, Macedonian. Lysimachos. 305-281 BC. AV Stater (19.5mm, 8.54 g, 1h). In the name and types of Alexander III of Macedon. Ephesos mint. Struck circa 295/4-289/8 BC. Head of Athena right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet decorated with a coiled serpent / Nike standing left, holding wreath in extended right hand and cradling palm frond in left arm; E-bee-Φ in left field. Thompson –; Müller (Alexander) 506; Price 1875; HGC 3, 1741 (unlisted mint). Underlying luster, slight die wear. Good VF. Extremely rare, only one in Pella (the BM piece referenced by Price, and the only example in the ANS photofile), and one of only two on CoinArchives.

One aspect of the rarity of this piece, beyond its scant quantity, is the unusual depiction of Nike cradling a palm frond in her left arm, rather than the usual stylis (ship’s mast). The reason for this change in the standard type is unknown, but my reflect a contemporary victory by Lysimachos.
