KINGS of PAEONIA. Patraos. Circa 335-315 BC. AR Tetradrachm (23.5mm, 12.40 g, 5h). Astibos or Damastion mint. Head of Apollo right, wearing laurel wreath / Head of horse right; ΠATPAOY above. Peykov E2240 = HPM pl. XIX, 10 = EHC 187 = AMNG III/2, 1 (same dies); cf. May, Damastion 108 (for same obv. die); otherwise unpublished. Toned, even light roughness, a couple of shallow cuts, light marks. VF. Extremely rare, only one example published, in the BN; none in CoinArchives.

A spectacular rarity among the Paeonian coinage. The Paeonians were known for their light cavalry, thus the recurring horse motifs among the reverse types of Patraos and Audoleon. It is interesting that the obverse die here was also used to strike a civic issue in the Damastion series that was relatively contemporary to the present issue. Mørkholm, in EHC, remarks that the use of the die is “probably the result of the exhaustion of the mines,” but it is also possible that it was merely shared with the royal mint, if the Paeonian coins were struck at Damastion, which has been considered one of the likely mints for the kings.
