Hadrian. AD 117-138. AV Aureus (18mm, 6.77 g, 6h). Rome mint. Struck circa AD 124-125. HADRIANVS AVGVST, laureate bust right, slight drapery / COS above, III in exergue, she-wolf standing left, suckling the Twins (Romulus and Remus). RIC II.3 708 (same rev. die as illustration); Strack 145; Calicó 1236 corr. (bust type); BMCRE 448, note; CNG 108, lot 613 (same rev. die). Good VF. Extremely rare, apparently the sixth known and the third example in private hands.

This type is so rare that Calicó doubted if this variety with the abbreviated form of "Augustus" even existed. The RIC II.3 coin photo is of the example in Cabinet de France. Strack also notes examples in Vienna and Milan.
