Aion was a Hellenistic diety associated with time and represented the circle of life. In the latter part of the Classical Era, his cult became associated with several mystery religions concerned with the afterlife, such as the mysteries of Cybele, the Dionysian mysteries, Orphic religion, and the Mythaic mysteries. He is most often depicted surrounded by the signs of the Zodiac. The ouroboros, an image of a serpent or dragon eating its own tail, which became an early symbol of rebirth, can trace its roots to the early Aionion cults.
