Lucius Domitius Alexander was the Vicar (chief magistrate) of Africa who led a revolt against the Roman usurper Maxentius circa AD 308-310. A confused account by the historian Zosimus states that Maxentius, upon seizing power in Rome, demanded that Alexander send his son to court as a hostage; Alexander refused and had himself proclaimed emperor in Carthage instead. Alexander reopened the Carthage mint and struck a surprisingly wide variety of billon folles, comprising 17 reverse types in all. The revolt threatened to starve Rome of grain, and so Maxentius sent an army to Africa in the fall of AD 310, defeated Domitius Alexander, and recovered the province.
