Constantine I. As Caesar, AD 306-309. Æ Follis (26mm, 6.38 g, 6h). Londinium (London) mint. Struck circa November-December AD 307. Laureate and cuirassed bust right / Constantine I standing left, holding signum in each hand; –|–//[P]LN. RIC VI 97; C&T 5.03.014. Brown patina, verdigris. Near VF. Very rare issue as Caesar, only one in CoinArchives.

From the Paul DiMarzio Collection, purchased from Lee Toone (Hookmoor Ancient Coins FPL 1), 12 February 2016.

This follis is from the 2nd reduction at London struck at 48 pieces to the Roman pound for a theoretical weight of 6.72 g, using dies with a beaded circle 23 mm in diameter. It was struck soon after the weight reduction in late November AD 307, and before Constantine was raised to Augustus on 25 December 307. This type for Constantine I as Caesar is part of the “Italianate” series struck to commemorate the alliance between Constantine and Maximian. They are very rare and seldom come onto the market. The type continues after Constantine becomes Augustus and these are less rare.
