This coin was apparently struck in northern Gaul by a local Roman official, Germanus Indutilli L. At the time, the previous local coinage, of Celtic origin, had been removed from circulation, and was to be replaced by Imperial currency. It is thought that this issue was struck as an exigency before the arrival of the official coinage from Lugdunum, upon whose types this issue is based.
