EGYPT, Alexandria. Marcus Aurelius. AD 161-180. Æ Drachm (33mm, 21.48 g, 12h). Dated RY 12 (AD 148/9). Laureate bust right, slight drapery on left shoulder / Frontal view of tetrastyle temple with steps, within; window with drapery below framing facing bust of Serapis, below; door between two statues (Isis and Harpocrates?), smaller doors between outer columns; facing bust of Serapis within upper pediment; L IB (date) below. Köln –; Dattari (Savio) 9346 (date and bust type uncertain); K&G –; RPC IV.4 Online 17001 var. (bust); Emmett –. Red-brown patina, surfaces a bt rough, obverse fields smoothed, ends of legend slightly strengthened. Good Fine. Extremely rare, one similar in CoinArchives (Naville Numismatics 48, lot 284; hammer £3400).

A very rare reverse type known for years 12 and 16 only. This is the only extant coin where the date is clear, all other coins of this type are dated to year 12 by obverse die links. The temple style is different between the two years as well, year 16 has a triangular pediment above the central window whereas the year 12 coins do not. The clear date on this coin makes this a very important piece of the numismatic puzzle. Additionally, while the bust type on this coin is known, this is the first recorded pairing with this reverse.

Closing Date and Time: 18 May 2022 at 12:20:40 ET.
