SELEUKID EMPIRE. Antiochos III ‘the Great’. 222-187 BC. Æ (24mm, 13.65 g, 6h). Uncertain mint 73, military mint associated with Ekbatana. Struck circa 210 BC. Laureate head right of Antiochos III as Apollo / Elephant with mahout advancing right; tripod to left, monogram below. SC 1272 var. (unlisted variety); HGC 9, 469. Dark green patina, some light scratches. VF. Unpublished issue.

Ex VAuctions 360 / NBJ E-Auction 2 (23 April 2021), lot 23.

At first glance, this issue appears to be a new variety of SC 1084, rather than 1272, as there is no monogram in the right field of the reverse, which is present (in varying forms) on all of the issues of SC 1272–4. However, comparing the style of both the obverse and reverse here to published examples from each series, it is clear that it is identical to that of SC 1272, and significantly different from that of SC 1084. Interestingly, the monogram under the elephant here is similar to those on the subsequent series, SC 1275–7, with an anchor to the left and only a monogram below the elephant’s belly. As such, it appears that the present coin is an example of a heretofore unpublished issue that bridges the two series, SC 1272–4 and 1275–7.
