ROMAN. Enameled Æ harness fitting. Circa 5th-6th centuries. (83.5 mm x 43.5 mm). Shield-shaped open work plaque, the body with cobalt blue and white mosaic enamel, the center and wings with turquoise green and coral red enamel. Two studs on back for fixture to leather harness, and four loops at edges for further attachments. Enamel chipped in places, a couple of loops broken. Otherwise, a colorful example of late Roman ornate enamel work. |
